El Dorado ("The Golden One") is the name of a legendary city of incredible wealth that was supposedly hidden within a remote valley in the Andes Mountains of South America.
The legend of El Dorado appears to have developed as a part of the Spanish obsession with locating gold, silver, and other precious metals or jewels. During one of these treasure-hunting expeditions, the Spanish Conquistadors were told of the existence of a fabulous city where the "streets were paved with gold" and the residents bathed themselves with gold dust instead of water. Such a city , of course, never existed and more than one scenario states that the residents of Central America probably "invented" the story of El Dorado as a way to "encourage" the Spanish to move on to a different tribe's territory.
In spite of the fact that no treasure was ever found, the search for El Dorado eventually led to the Spanish conquest of northern and western South America.
Since the conclusion of the Spanish Conquest the conception of El Dorado as a metaphor for a place of great wealth has found its way into western literature a number of times, most prominently as the "city of gold"in Milton's "Paradise Lost ," Voltaire's "Candide," as the theme of Edgar Allan Poe's "El Dorado." In each of these works El Dorado represents the folly of pursuing material wealth at the neglect of one's spiritual or personal growth.
More recently the legend of El Dorado has been part of the plots of "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" (where it is portrayed as its North American incarnation, the city of Cibola) and in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
Despite its new-found notoriety, El Dorado remains nothing more than a myth that arose from the greed of the early European explorers of Central and South America
