Mythical Places

Mythical places are locations that exist only within the context of a local folklore or a broader mythology. While there may be a tenuous connection to a location that may have existed in the past, the characteristics attributed to mythical places bear no relationship to the real world. As an example, mythical places are often depicted as being the home of of dragons, unicorns, or talking animals and are usually described as "peaceful" or "beautiful."

Mythical places can also be central to established religious faiths, such as the Judaic-Christian-Islamic Garden of Eden, or may have been "created" by subconscious desires that such places exist as a potential source of vast riches as in the legends of El Dorado, the Fountain of Youth, or the Seven Cities of Gold that were motivating factors in the early Spanish exploration of North America. Other notable mythic locations include Camelot and Middle Earth.

Direct and indirect references to these supposed idyllic locations (such as the "Lost City" of Atlantis or the Garden of Eden) are found in so many different, geographically-separated cultures that some have claimed that this is "proof" that these places must have existed at one time or another. However, mythologists such as Joesph Campbell gave shown that such places generally arise from sources such as primitive religion or hero legends and thus represent "ideal" homes for "ideal" beings
