The ruins of Mapungubwe are often referred to as the Lost City of Africa. With it’s indescribable stone cities and golden artifacts it is hard to imagine that the land was considered uninhabited until 1652 when Dutch settlers arrived. The Lost City was discovered in 1932 by E. S. J. van Graan and the people of Mapungubwe were finally given credit for all of the exquisite gold work and building they did. Many items were created out of iron, copper, and gold. Pottery, ivory, shells, bones, and glass beads were used to trade with other cultures such as China.
Mapungube was a Venda city and the Venda believed that the white crocodile was sacred. A white rock was placed in the throat of the dead kings after legends of the crocodile’s eating small rocks to help with digestion. Virgins were also given to the crocodile as a gift. Elephants were considered sacred after the great leader Toyandou (meaning “head of the elephant”).
Much information has been found about the Lost City of Africa due to the great discoveries of many archeologists. From the structures of their buildings and their trades to their beliefs in mythical rituals, it is hard to imagine such splendor being denied simply because it was done by black Africans. Finally they can be known for all they did to better their people.
