Lost Cities and Civilizations : A Quick Look History has shown the modern world that we are built upon the ruins of lost civilizations. Centuries of knowledge have either been washed away by great floods, smothered with volcanic ash or destroyed in an empires' bid for a vast legacy. Famous cities lost to the modern world such as Atlantis, Pompeii, and the newly discovered Yonaguni-Jima, Japan arise our curiosities of ancient civilizations.

Known by millions worldwide as the Lost city of Atlantis, historians argue on whether the city actually existed, was buried in a Biblical flood or perhaps is locked in a deep freeze in the Antarctic. From the writings of Plato in Timaeus and Critias, he states that the ancient city was destroyed in a cataclysm around 9000 B.C. Historians are skeptical, of course, on the lack of factual evidence supporting the evidence that the lost city of Atlantis ever existed. Supposedly there is an ancient Egyptian map depicting Atlantis, drawn by a priest in 1665. This map is supposed to depict the lost city as a land mass between the Americas and Africa with an astonishing resemblance to the geography of Antarctica.

Pompeii was lost to the world in a violent eruption form Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Along with Herculaneum, the volcano buried Pompeii under yards of ash and pumice rock until rediscovered in 1748. This previous lost city holds the preserved bodies of the men, women and children killed in the eruption. Newly discovered by accident by an underwater tour guide 20 years ago, Yonaguni-Jima off of the coast of Japan is one of the worlds' most fascinating,submerged cities lost to man. One of the larger structures in this underwater lost city resembles a partial step pyramid, similar to the Temple of the Sun located in Northern Peru. Scientists are calling this lost civilization one of the oldest on record, dating back at minimum to 8000 B.C.

Cities of the ancients will always arise our curiosities in lost civilizations. As we discover more and more of cities lost, historians can have a greater understanding of the the beginnings of civilization.
